Whether you’re on the busy day shift or the loooong nights, there are certain things you need to make your shift pass by without any added speed bumps! From coffee to hand cream, there are a few quality essential items that we know you couldn’t do your shift without!
COFFEE!! - From the early morning wakeups to the all-nighters, a quality cup of coffee (or tea!) is a must.
Water - Keeping up fluids is super important - especially for long shifts when you are constantly on your feet. Staying hydrated ensures that you can perform at your peak during your shift (and no, coffee does not count as fluids in this case!)
Comfy shoes - Speaking of constantly being on your feet, a pair of comfy shoes is probably one of the best investments that you will make. As you spend a majority of a shift on your feet, the last thing that you need is uncomfortable shoes or blisters.
Pens - As well as spare pens for when you lose or misplace your original pen!
Hand cream and sanitiser – Now more than ever hand sanitiser is a given and must be used as often as possible. However, the alcohol in sanitiser can often dry out your hands. Hand creams and moisturiser can help to keep hands soft!
A watch (preferably one with a second hand) – Not just for checking the time, nurses need excellent time management skills, so a watch is handy for when you can’t access your phone. Having a watch with a second hand also is useful when you need to measure heart rates or anything else that needs to be timed.
Stethoscope – One of the most important tools you’ll need. Stethoscopes not only listen to a patient’s heartbeat but also their veins and intestines to ensure they are functioning properly.
Scissors and tape – Another simple but important necessity you’ll need regularly during a shift. From cutting off a tough dressing to holding an IV tube in place, these small things can make a massive difference to a patient’s experience.
Last but certainly not least (and our personal favourite!):
SCRUBS! – A quality pair of scrubs not only look professional but offer comfort and practicality as well. We have a range of comfortable scrubs in varying colours. Explore our range, here.
So, there you have it. Our list is certainly not extensive, as the essential items you’ll need for your shift will vary depending on which ward you are working in and how long your shift is.
